Living the Art Life™

Penny Black Christmas

by Cheryl 3 Comments

I have had a whole bunch of ideas and inspiration for my holiday cards this year and I even made a few prototypes of different types.   Nevertheless, I was actually pleased to find myself being drawn to the first inspiration I had this year for my holiday cards.  That inspiration came from some Penny Black stamps I saw at my LSS, Everything Scrapbook & Stamps.

These cards were a lot of fun to make.   I used not only basic stamping techniques, but learned a few things on the way.   I was introduced to JudiKins Sticky Stuff embossing powder.   This is basically a powdered glue that becomes sticky when heat embossed.   I first stamped the tree image multiple times at slightly different levels using VersaMagic Niagara Mist.  Then working very quickly, I coated the stamped image with Sticky Stuff.   Tapped off the extra and heat set.   When working with Sticky Stuff, you only heat until it starts to look shiny and then STOP….  Again, very quickly cover with glitter.   I used Barbara Trombley’s crystal Art Glitter.   Tap off excess glitter.  I then stamped the sentiment on the outside with Versamark and covered with Vintage embossing powder (EP) by Sparkle N Sprinkle.   Tapped off the excess and heat embossed until raised and shiny.   Added a few stickles to the trees with Ruby Slipper and Platinum.  The dimension and sparkle on these cards are so beautiful and so very elegant.
I stamped the inside with a sentiment from PaperTrey Ink’s Signature Christmas using Memento Rich Cocoa Ink.   Absolutely love this stamp set and there are so many sentiments to choose from.   The cards are cut from PaperTrey Ink’s Rustic Cream cardstock.   The small flecks in the card add such a vintage homemade look to the card.   Those little flecks show up much better on the picture below.   Please click on any of the pictures for a closer look.   Even still, my photography skills cannot do this card justice and you can’t reallly see it in 3D here.

I will admit that this was fun, but it was also a challenge.  No matter how organized I was when I started this project and had all my supplies ready, each card is unique (some would say imperfect).   I’m having to let go of that search for perfection and realize some things are NOT that important.   Sometimes the ink on one of the trees would dry quicker than I could get the Sticky Stuff on there.   Even using a mask for placement of the front sentiment, sometimes the trees would still be higher than expected or my sentiment got stamped lower than expected.   Sometimes the tree would still get the little rubber marks from around the image itself.
I was so grateful for the X-large tattered angels splat mat for this project.  It did help keep the glitter and glitz somewhat contained.   I do still have glitter in many places and around my room, but that is mostly from my hands and moving cards from one table to the next for the Stickles to dry.

I do have one tip for you.   SWIFFER SWEEPER dry cloths are the BOMB for cleaning up after EP and glitter.   They quickly wiped up my splat mat, table, and even my cards.   After using this super fine EP and embossing, there was still a sheen of EP on my card.   A quick swipe with a Swiffer and it was good.
